New Orleans The new book, "The American Nurse," and its companion website, www.americannurseproject.com, feature eight nurses from the Interim LSU Public Hospital. Their stories give a glimpse into the daily lives of nurses and the significant and often profound ways they influence their patients' outcomes.

The book includes from ILH Goldie Baker-Huguenel, RN, NCBF; Deborah Nettles, CNS, FNP-C; Julie Newman, RN; Keithen Potts, BSN, RN; and Colleen Lemoine, MN, RN-BC, APRN, AOCN. Lemoine's photograph also graces the front cover of this large-format, hardcover book.

Besides the five ILH nurses who appear in the book, the website includes from ILH Angela Davis-Collins, RNC; Gretchen Delo, RN; and Bryan Fagot, BSN, RN.

The project has photographs of nurses nationwide and interviews with them. Carolyn Jones was the photographer and interviewer.

With nurses from 28 institutions, including the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, the project attempts to portray the vital role nurses play as healers in the daily delivery of healthcare. Nurses discuss issues such as diabetes, education, end-of-life, obesity, paperwork, poverty, technology, the nation's healthcare system and choosing nursing as a profession.
