About the Library

The Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center library is an integral part of the hospital community supporting staff physicians, residents, medical students, nurses, nursing students, and Allied Health personnel. The library is an active member of a five-state network of hospital and academic libraries enabling members to borrow articles, books, or videos. The medical library's intent is to provide an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and research.

Library Staff

L.J.C.M.C. medical library staff consists of one library specialist. Please feel free to ask Amanda Voisin, Library Specialist 2, at extension 1257, or by email avoisi@lsuhsc.edu for assistance.

Books

Books are shelved in the library according the National Library of Medicine classification system. Certain medical books have been designated as reference books and may not be checked out from the library. These books are marked "Reference - Do Not Remove from the Library."

Journals

New issues of journals are processed by the librarian and then shelved on the current journal shelves. Journals are arranged in alphabetical order according to the title. A detailed list of journal holdings is located on the patron computers. Journals are "non-circulating" and may not be checked out.

Book/Journal Request

The Librarian is happy to consider purchasing any book or journal thought to be of value to the library's collection. Please make recommendations to the librarian. The Medical Staff is also surveyed annually for additions to the library stock and service satisfaction.

Borrowing Privileges

L.J.C.M.C. employees may borrow circulating materials. All materials may be renewed providing no one else has requested it. The loan period is for three weeks. Library materials that are checked out should not be given to another user as the borrower is responsible for their return.

Interlibrary Loans

Materials not available in the L.J.C.M.C. library collection can be obtained from other libraries through the librarian. Materials can be borrowed through DOCLINE and the National Library of Medicine Interlibrary Loan Request and Routing System. Keep in mind that most libraries will only fax articles in clinical emergencies.

Patron Computers

Patron computers are located in the Medical Library for medical research and word processing. All library patrons must follow L.J.C.M.C. Hospital Policy & Procedure on Internet Usage. Failure to adhere to the intent of this policy may result in the removal of the user's internet accessibility or disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.

Copy Machine & Printer

A copy machine is located in the library for library material only. Copyright laws are strictly enforced. Patrons can also print to this machine.
