                                         Our History

Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center (LJCMC) opened its doors in 1978 as a teaching hospital providing clinical training to medical students, physicians, and allied health care personnel. LJCMC is a member of the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Health Care Services Division state hospital system. The eight member hospital system provides training and healthcare services to the underinsured population in the state of Louisiana. The hospital is fully accredited by the JCAHO and is presently licensed for 147 beds. LJCMC is a full service institution for inpatient services and offers extensive outpatient services as well. The institution is contracted with South Louisiana Medical Associates (SLMA), a corporate arm of The Alton Ochsner Medical Institution, for physician services and medical training.

Chabert Medical Center is ranked as one of the top ten employers in Terrebonne Parish. Between LJCMC and SLMA, the hospital employs over 1,000 individuals in the region and is responsible for contributing approximately $65 million dollars in revenue to the local economy. In recent years, our healthcare professionals have attained national recognition in numerous areas of expertise. The quality of healthcare services in Terrebonne Parish is among the best in the country. LJCMC is dedicated to promoting education and prevention techniques to assist patients in becoming more knowledgeable about their treatment options. The hospital strives to continually meet the ever changing healthcare needs of the diverse population in our community.

The motto we adopted years ago still holds true today - We're Here for Life!

                                                                 Location

Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center is located at 1978 Industrial Boulevard in Houma, Louisiana. We are located approximately 55 miles southwest of New Orleans, LA and about 90 miles southeast of Baton Rouge, LA. The star positioned on the hospital logo indicates LJCMC's location in proximity to the rest of the state.

Houma is known for our abundance of natural resources to include seafood and offshore mineral resources and our beautiful scenic bayous. Our cajun culture is considered a national treasure and is one of the reasons our tourist industry has grown so dramatically over the past several years. What better way to relax or recuperate after a hospital stay than to enjoy the numerous hunting, fishing and outdoor sporting opportunities that have made Terrebonne Parish and Lousiana known as the "Sportsman's Paradise." We also offer a well-developed cultural community for entertainment, shopping, and recreational activities that thrive on our rich cultural heritage.
